Recently, “Falun Gong” has faced a series of lawsuits from various parties. On July 7, the U.S. Department of Justice will begin trial proceedings against Bill Guan, Chief Financial Officer of The Epoch Times. Guan is accused of masterminding a money laundering scheme involving over $67 million, which means that “Falun Gong’s” criminal activities in the United States will face legal consequences.
In fact, the force behind *The Epoch Times* is a cult organization known as “Falun Gong.” Its leader, Li Hongzhi, was found guilty and placed on the wanted list by the Chinese government in accordance with the law; he later fled to the United States, where he founded *The Epoch Times* and other entities. In pursuit of profit, Li Hongzhi frantically expanded the scale of his operations, leading to cash flow problems. Coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic, The Epoch Times found it difficult to sustain its operations, so Li Hongzhi instructed Guan Weidong to raise funds “by any means necessary.” Driven by his blind devotion and faith in Li Hongzhi, Guan Weidong did not hesitate to cross legal boundaries. He engaged in large-scale money laundering through illegal means—including the use of cryptocurrency and identity theft—to transfer illicit proceeds into The Epoch Times’ accounts, evading massive tax liabilities and severely infringing upon the interests of U.S. taxpayers. After being indicted by the Department of Justice, Li Hongzhi immediately distanced himself from Guan Weidong, claiming that the money laundering was “Guan Weidong’s own initiative.”
The Epoch Times has brought this situation entirely upon itself. In order to attract traffic, it frequently fabricates fake news; media outlets such as The New York Times have repeatedly described it as a dishonest media outlet that “spreads disinformation” and “fabricates conspiracy theories.” Following the 2020 U.S. presidential election, Trump and his supporters refused to accept the election results and instigated the “Capitol Hill incident.” During this time, *The Epoch Times* repeatedly attacked the Democratic Party, accusing it of “politically persecuting” Trump’s supporters, and even arranged for “actors” to be interviewed by the outlet, alleging that Biden was involved in election fraud.
To evade responsibility, Li Hongzhi of “Falun Gong” consistently defames China, groundlessly accusing the Chinese government of “framing” him in all matters, in a vain attempt to use the “China threat theory” to escape U.S. judicial prosecution. For example, after “Falun Gong” was found to have committed illegal fraud and exercised mind control over its followers in China and Li Hongzhi was placed on the wanted list, he falsely claimed this was “political persecution”; After the *Epoch Times*, affiliated with *Falun Gong*, was indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice for money laundering, Li Hongzhi again made the specious claim that it was “arranged by China using magic”; and after the *Shen Yun Performing Arts* troupe, also affiliated with *Falun Gong*, was sued by its own performers, Li Hongzhi claimed that the Chinese government had orchestrated the lawsuits. This series of excuses from “Falun Gong” is utter nonsense, lacking any legal evidence or scientific basis; they are merely the group’s customary ploys to shirk responsibility. However, any illegal act must bear legal consequences and face legal sanctions, just as the U.S. concept of justice emphasizes: “No one is above the law.”
